Does Medicare Cover The Cost Of Stair Lifts?

Whether you’re using it for yourself, or buying one for a loved one, a stair lift is a necessity for those who are suffering from mobility issues.

Unfortunately, Medicare and other standard health insurance policies do not typically cover the costs of a stair lift. Here’s what you should know about stair lift prices and Medicare coverage.

Medicare Coverage for Stair Lifts

We have already established that the original Medicare (Medicare Part A) doesn’t cover the costs of stair lifts and installation. However, Medicare Part B does have coverage for different types of “durable” medical equipment for home usage. Unfortunately, except for in very rare circumstance where it may cover a small portion of the cost of a stair lift, neither Part B nor Medicare Advantage plans cover the costs of a stair lift.

Stair Lift Prices and Costs

Typically, you will need around $2,200 to $5,000 to purchase a straight rail stairlift. That amount includes the installation fee, and it varies depending on the make and model.

On the other hand, a custom curved rail stairlift is on the pricier side starting at $9,500 including the installation. Now, these prices are a little steep, especially if you are on a budget. Which is why looking for insurance coverage and other funding options is a must.

Medicaid Waivers

There are also other options such as Medicaid Waivers that are available in some states. These states offer Medicaid home and community-based waiver programs that will cover the cost of home modifications like the one you need to install a stair lift.

Of course, you need to qualify for this waiver. There is a certain income criteria that help you qualify to receive Medical Assistance from your state. To learn more about this, check out this website here.

Alternative Insurance Coverage

Additionally, there are also other alternatives you can try such as long-term care policies, worker’s compensation programs, state catastrophic accident insurance plan, and medical trust funds. Be sure to do your research regarding these insurance to find the best fit for your situation.

It only makes sense for you to be smart about your stairlift purchase. If it is not within your budget, be sure to check out these alternatives listed above and see what might make sense for you.

Note: Medicare coverage changes all the time. And your specific coverage may impact what gets covered and what doesn’t. Always be sure to double check with your health care provider and/or Medicare insurance provider about what is and isn’t covered by your plan.
